Valentine One Radar Detector information
Harry wanted me to post this V1 "J" bug information....so here it is.
I've been seriously thinking of getting a new (firmware 3.826) Which is their latest release. I've been watching it close since .823/824.
Anwho, this is how it works. I'm getting very credible sources from people that actually used V1s all over the nation. So don't worry about that. AND, VR reads these forums about their V1. So yeah.
The "J" alert works on the same principle as the false-alarm guard which has been on the V1 for ages. The false Ka signal that the V1 sees from another detector is actually a harmonic (third harmonic?) of the junky detector's local oscillator. The false alarm guard in its original form witheld the Ka alert for a few instants (we're talking fractions of a second) while it looked for lower harmonics of the LO. I believe it is also capable of looking for harmonics before a Ka alert is received, i.e. all the time. Harmonics present = don't alert because it's a junk detector. No harmonics present = alert because it's real.
Since POP signals are so short, the V1 can't be guaranteed that it will have time to scan for the lower harmonics. Now, with POP enabled, it goes ahead and alerts while it keeps looking for the harmonics. Now, if it finds the harmonic after the initial alert, it cancels it with a "J". It is really just a modification of the original algorithm to allow it to terminate a Ka alert.
You CAN turn off the "J" feature by turning off the false alarm guard. What you end up with is no false "J" alerts but CONSTANT falsing if you live anywhere but the middle of nowhere. Trust me on that.
VR originally released pop with the 3.816 firmware revision (I think) without a "J" feature. That means that once the V1 started alerting it kept alerting until the signal went away, and it always alerted unless it saw the lower LO harmonics before seeing the Ka signal. The "J" alert was released because the falsing was unbearable.
I wish V1 would allow downloads of their software updates so we don't get reemed on every update they release. We already pay premium dollar for these things, why can't they provide better support for them? That is my only gruff. I love mine to death. It has saved me from, say, 15 tickets now already.
