custom fiberglass sub box

so i caught the car audio bug again not too long ago and told you guys i had a suprise. well i never actually posted pics of it so i thought i'd do it tonight while i'm procrastinating from studying for finals. (only one final and its computer science 101, so maybe i am studying...:dunno )

anywho here are the pics.
started with fleece. cut out a base that would fit against the rear of the back seat. then cut out two rings for the sub, one that was the top mount cutout and then another that would go around the actual mounting level making it flush. cut some wood dowels to give it height and suspend the rings wher i wanted them. then i wrapped a fleece blanket around it all and stapled it to the base

used fiberglass resin to cover the sheet once over to get both sides of the fiberglass mat wet and sticky, then resin over the top, this is after one coat of mat. (don't worry too much about looking perfect at this stage because there will be much more finishing work, just try to keep the air pockets minimal

This is after the 3 layers of fiberglass and some extensive 40 & 60 grit sanding. you can see the wood dowel inside the box still

This is the close up of my ring design to keep the top of the sub flush with the box design

Profile of the box to give a better view of my design and shape

after using body filler to fill in imperfections in the fiberglass and sanding it down a little. the more work you do here the better the final product will look! believe me sanding is your friend. you can also see the DAP expanding foam i put inside the box to creat the right amount of airspace for the alpine type R 10" sub

here is the final product, i am going to go back and do some more filler and sanding, i thought the paper i was using was fine enough but some scratches showed up through the paint.

what do you guys think???

Looks awesome. I've never seen custom fiberglass work before. :)

(and btw, you posted this thread 3 times, I cleaned up the others and left this one, where the images seem to be working correctly)

Hey, you should change this around into a DIY, and I'll add it to the knowledge base for making your own FG sub enclosure. That'd be something unique, and it'd be pretty easy to type up since you already have the photos showing progress along the way. :thumbup

Either way though, looks awesome. :rock

haha it must have created a new thread everytime i clicked back then post cause i had to fix some pics and rather than edit i clicked back. oh well thanks for the fix harry!

Nice job cleaning it up. The key is definitely to take your time with it. I made some rings for ///Meance328i a while back, but I don't know if he'd gotten around to making his fiberglass project yet.

thats really sweet. I should do something like that for my 318. How much does that thing weigh?

Rooz 03-13-2006 09:36 PM

Sweet, how long did you leave the Fiberglass to dry for?

94bmw325i 03-14-2006 03:33 PM

Thats awesome, I always wanted to try fiberglassing a sub enclosure for my car. So is this designed to fit your 5 series, or any car?

Nice work dude!

Without the sub its not that heavy, 3/4" MDF sheet, fiberglass, and body filler. so maybe about 20-30 lbs rough estimate.

i left the fiberglass to dry for a good day and a half after i had finished all my layers.

just designed for the 5 series, the weird cuts fit flush against the walls of the trunk keeping it from moving around even though i'll most likely fasten it down too.

Was wondering because I thought you were still selling your car.

devinwwu 03-15-2006 12:15 AM

its still for ale but having it in the garage for the last 3 weeks and not being able to drive it has me excited about it again... i'm going to leave it for sale but i won't sell if someone doesn't offer close to what i'm asking

Nice work Devin. I never knew how fiberglass fabrication was done.
