I don't think a sub is too much.. a sub is the way to go for getting the low end in there... not just for that rattle noise people want for listening to rap.
i have an alpine HU and infinity reference speakers (kick panels, and tweets), as well as the rears that came with my car.... i have a custom made box the fits well into my trunk not taking up a whole lot of space that holds my infinity reference 1230 sub (12 inch) and amp.
when i disconnect or turn off my sub, i notice a big loss in low end. turning it back on..its amazing on how big of a different there is.
no, a sub is not too much, but it can weigh a lot... my sub, amp, and box weigh wayyyy to freaking much...but whatever.. my car is slow anyways... m42 engine....

it all depends... u had subs in my 318 (they still are in it, i just dont realy drive teh 318 anymore) and liked it for a while... they fit pretty good but still moved a little bit during aggressive driving... once i got the 325 i said i wasnt going to put them back in. In fact i havent done anything to the 325 sound wise yet... eventaully i might put some 6x9's in there and some better quality speakers but i dont think ill ever go back to subs again... The only way i would ever do it again would be if it was one 10 in a small box that i could unplug and take out whenever i went to the track, or on a drive somewhere just because brien is right.... you do notice a difference on the low end

if your into tracking / agressive driving on a constant basis then i wouldn't consider subs because of all the extra weight you have to add to get them. i love the low end sound and the overall feel of the music your listening to (which for me is trance / techno mostly). i wouldn't give my W3's up for anything
They add a lot of weight to the car... a bit more than another person with you constantly weight-wise. However I think it's worth it for some "enhanced" music listening to when not agressive driving.
Or for the best of both worlds, make an easy connector so you can take out the sub box easily if you're going to the track or something.

thats how mine is. my sub box just unscrews from the 2 wires that send the power / audio to them. lift the box out and there you go. still have sound without bass and (for me) just lost about 80lbs

it doesnt matter what kind of music you listen to.... subs are really nice even if you dont listen to a lot of rap, techno, or whatever... i dont listen to those kinds of music and it is a must(for me)... i dont use it just for a boom boom boom boom boom boom boom drowning low end noise that overtakes your highs and mids... that is terrible

That's true. It enhances any song. (except maybe Aqua... haha)
I don't have subs and I listen to stuff that requires the thump. However, it doesn't bother at me at all, and my music sounds pretty good regardless. I don't plan on running subs.

I used to think the same, but then I got subs and would never go back. haha

i had 2 10'' infinity kappa perfect 10.1d subs/ 800 watts in my jeep (now my sisters car). it weighed a lot! IMO. i knew it would work in my bimmer but it would add weight, and also have hardly any trunk space... i have the HK 10 speaker stereo, but it does lack some bass. ive been thinking about the amp/sub from bavauto...has anyone heard anything about that. thanx!!!
