AMP exploed...or something?

so in th epast three days my amp has been shutting off randomly. TOday it just turnd off and didnt come back on.
i checked all the wiring and everythign fine. The battery still works cause ican start the car, although maybe ill buy a new one?

anyone got a troubleshooting thing for this, cause the amp wasnt cheap and i dont feel like spending another 500 on an amp.

any ideas? :cry

Amp won't even power up?

Numark318i 02-10-2006 07:35 PM

nope

Open it up. Sniff everything inside, look for brown or burned circuits. You could get lucky and find a blown fuse inside. It's either clipping or there's a short somewhere. You're not overdriving it, right??

Numark318i 02-10-2006 07:45 PM

overdriving? by that u mean listening to it very loud? Not really. Atleast not in the past week or so

ok, let me ask some simple questions

What kind of fuse is powering it up from the power cable? Is it the oval glass kind?

yea
is that no good?

umm i checked the amp, took it apart and everythign looks kosher.(heh)
so im considering a new battery. i think i need a new one anyways, this ones pretty old. I guess a new one cant hurt.

Rooz 02-10-2006 08:14 PM

yeah, those fuses aren't the best.. Sometime what happends is that the way those fuse are made, if they get hot, the welding that olds them together kind of melts and drifts to the bottom of the fuse, so they might not look broken, but they are no good... try changing the fuse...

Numark318i 02-10-2006 08:43 PM

ok ill try that.

or better yet go get a circuit breaker that works with your amperage application. that way if your mom or friend take your car out, all you have to do is push a button and the connection is broken.

Numark318i 02-13-2006 11:11 AM

...thats a good idea spieluhr.
So i tried the new fuse, the amp would blink on and off. I tried connecting it directly(i know, horrible idea, but i was desperate at the time) and still the amp just blipped on and then off. I tried using different cable, still nothing. I going to go to the shop where we had it originally installed in the other car. They can check to see if its blown or what the hell is wrong with it.

If its broken, well then ill buy a new one and have it professionally installed.

Rooz 02-13-2006 11:13 AM

Cool man, I'll be able to help you out with that if u want me to, keep us informed

Spieluhr 02-13-2006 02:33 PM

you dont need pro installation on an amp bro. we can help you out.

Dudesky 02-13-2006 04:30 PM

Numark, just a thought for the hell of it- you never mentioned anything about the ground cable . . have you inspected it? Made sure you still have a solid ground connection?

oh its not that. I figured that way i can have someone else clean up my work. Right now i had the amp glued down with silicone on the carpet, the wires werent hidden very well and the crossovers arent attached to my trunk very well. Maybe if i took it somewhere they could make that look...well nicer.

Dudesky as for the Ground, I grounded it to the battery.
