I don't think they even really do anything sound wise, from what I have heard it is pretty poor speaker placement. You would be fine just cutting the speakers probably, and investing in new 5.25" components, which will make a much bigger difference.

Yeah, you'll be fine even if you don't change out the 5-1/4's. You'll not notice much of a difference. The crossover slopes between the mids and the tweeters aren't tight enough, therefore there's a lot of overlap in frequency . . in reality, the tweeters are doing the most work anyway.
Umnitza now provides a mechanic to install all parts ordered right in the box! It's their new "Total customer service program" that will eliminate all the haters and keep incompetents from breaking **** and blaming the vendor! When you are all set simply call INS and they will pick him up free of charge.
I broke down and bought it from the dealer. Turned out to $80 and I got a 15% discount for the BMWCCA memebership, for a total of $68. Ripped my door apart, replaced the speaker, replaced all the stupid plastic clips and put it all back together. Everything is back and looks good, and I don't have that blown speaker sound anymore.

they are useless... if you replaced the tweeter (the smaller speaker) with aftermarket, they will usually cover sound range of the 2inch speakers as well.

I've never personally been a fan of stock systems or components. I'm in the process of replacing everything in my car with PG Xenon series 5.25" component sets and the matching 200Wx4ch amp, and a Pioneer DEH-P7100MP head unit. There's just a 'little' modification needed in the rear deck and front kickpanels... but will be WELL worth it once I'm done.
