New system setup. Added an amp!

So I was at school today with Chris and Chris2 talking .. I never really thought about it that much but last night I looked up my subs ratings. They are 12W3v2 from JL rated at 300Wrms and 600max. I have 2 of them so together it's 600W rms. Well. I had them both running 250W PEAK POWER. That would easily explain why they sounded distorted at high volumes and the such. SO -

I got a new amp! Mono-Channel amp from Alpine. An MRD-M065 rated at 400W rms @ 4ohms. 900W peak. I would have gone with the M1005 but I couldn't justify spending another $120 for 100 more watts. (the amp I got was $349.

THEY ARE AMAZING. <3333

I mounted the new amp ontop of the sub box (it almost didn't fit in the trunk. i started cussing a bit and smacked it once and then it slid in.) because the 500/5 amp I already have is way huge. It sounds (and looks) amazing now. I can't wait to go driving tomorrow.

AHH. I don't get it. The amp is rated 400W RMS @ 4ohms yet my 250W MAX channel from the 500/5 is much clearer and louder than the new amp.

Could anyone think of what it might be? Apparently something isn't setup right. ie: wiring faulty or incorrect in some manor, amp settings are wrong. i don't know and i can't figure it out. =0

here are the specs on what i have. maybe someone can figure it out.

Subs -
Nominal Diameter: 12 inches (300 mm)
Continuous Power Handling: 300 Watts
Voice Coil: 2.25" diameter, 4-layer, Kapton former
Available Configurations: Dual 2 ohm, Dual 4 ohm or Dual 6 ohm

Amp -
» mono subwoofer car amplifier
» 400 watts x 1 at 4 ohms (600 watts RMS x 1 at 2 ohms)
» Class D design
» Bass Engine® features:
• low-pass digital filter, 30-200 Hz, with a selectable 12 or 24 dB/octave slope
• selectable subsonic filter (off, 15Hz, or 30 Hz with 24 dB/octave slope)
• Bass EQ (0-16 dB at 45 Hz)
» CEA-2006 Compliant

i'll reply when i get home with the ohm and other specs of my particular subs. please comment with ideas though so i can begin troubleshooting.

Did you upgrade your wiring to handle the increase in signal strength if that was necessary?
Set your high/low-pass filters correctly, both on the head and the amp?

alpine lies .. the amp gives 400rms@4ohms .... at 14.4volts. eff that.

it's 250rms@4ohms at 12volts. what a bitch. im going to resell it i think and get a new enclosure and just run a 2 channel so each sub has 300rms .. how it should be.
