02 X5 remote start. not functioning correctly

I had my 02 4.4 X5 outfitted with a Avital 4000 remote start that is not functioning correctly. It operates erratically. It will start one minute then the next it will turn over and shut off right away. The installer believes this may be a faulty break light switch that I have since replaced with no luck. I checked their wiring and everything seems correct except i cannot find their tach wire.. If I move the break light switch, and pedal around manually, I can get the car to start some times. Has anyone else had this problem??? Also when activating the remote start, the factory alarm begins to sound then shuts off, is this normal??
thanks
