Hi,
I tried to fit 2 single din units (1 dvd player & the other a motorized screen). I was told that this wouldn't be possible due the bottom half of the back having the heating pipes there. If you look at the back of the original bmw system you will see that the top comes out more than the bottom half. The other way to do it is have 2 single units & have the dvd player as a single din unit where the bmw unit it & have the screen where the air vents are just above it. Seen this done and looks fantastic & I will get this done in my e39 too.
Hope this helps.

It can be done
This is a Pioneer AVIC Z2 w/Ipod adapter, Bluetooth & XM+Traffic.
It is hand made (by me). I kept the pattern. I had the wood color matched (dip) via a company I found on the web. It can be done!!!! It brought my 97 540i to the new millenium......... Not much modification

I did not have factory nav but now I do!!!! The ugraded, aftermarket version by Pioneer. It has all the bells and whistles. My OBC still works through the dash board but I only have the range & MPG. I removed my MID but you can keep if you move it to your glove box. This way you cam keep your full functions but I never used much but range & MPG anyway.
It is not that hard to do the install. Admittedly, I used a pro for the HU install but i made the bezel by hand (homemade).
Big tips.... Install everything you want at once, Bluetooth, Ipod, rear cam, XM, Nav DVD Bypass etc..... It is a pain to redo.
I kept the pattern and the how to to make the bezel.... Not hard (I made all the mistakes first!!!)
