Car Audio and Electronics
Sponsored by: SKOB on itunes Discuss sub and speaker setups, GPS navigation, XM radio, and anything else related to car audio and electronics.
does anyone know of a particular GPS unit, like garmin or another brand that has an output for both audio and video, (and also input) the reason i ask is because i want to see if i can hook one of those up to a touchscreen LCD without having to do a whole car computer setup
there are all kinds of GPS units such as GPS data loggers and mouse gps units... anyone know if any of these will work?

Garmin is already a touchscreen system
anyways, I'd recommend the tomtom system (if it's available in your area). The Garmin is okay, but sometimes confusing, especially in the 3d view and in 2d when it has zoomed out too far...
yes i know its touch screen, but i dont want the ghetto 3 in screen, id like to hook it up to a 7 or 8 in touchscreen and incorporate that into my center console and make it look nice

You either have to get one like ^^^ or get a real in-dash navigation that fits into a double-DIN opening. Some of the smaller, self contained GPS units like Garmin & Tom Tom may have outputs, but will not allow you to interface with your LCD touchscreen anyway, so there's no point.

the double din opening is just a screen, like you dont push a button and an ugly screen comes popping out?

^^^Yes, the screen is the actual face of the head/nav unit. It only moves out of the way to access the DVD/CD slot. Some examples are the Eclipse AVN5500, Pioneer's AVIC-D3, the Panasonic Strada, and Kenwood's DDX6019 / KNA-G510 package. You'd definitely have to mod the E36's dash, but I believe it's what you're looking for.
Thanks dudesky, i appreciate it. i just realized that i could definately build a carputer for so much cheaper, kinda ridiculous huh? with a car computer i can have navigation, dvd/mp3, bluetooth w/my phone(i dont have bluetooth w/my phone, but if i did, lol), and really anything else a computer can do
