Car Audio and Electronics

my stock speakers from 96' sound like bats out of hell. they're terrible. Im loking forward to replacing them and the speakers in the front asap. my back speakers are 5x1/4s. I was wondering if I can go w the 6x9s instead? ill prob. will need to be doing some costum cutting/ work, so does anyone have any advice or maybe a DIY?
Just a little word of advice. Sometimes bigger is not better. I'm currently running all separate components in my car (E30) (5 1/4" components sets all around) because l like the crisper sound from them. Some speakers like Infinity and MB Quart have Coaxial (woofer and tweeter) sets that have good sounds and maintain a good level of sound quality even at loud levels. 6x9's for me don't give me that quality sound I want and from past experience of using them, they distort when cranked up. Currently, my system doesn't push more than 700 watts, my amp is an MTX Thunder 895 pushing infinity 6 1/2" separates up front, Canton 5 1/4" in the back with 4 8" Kicker Solobarics in the spare tire well. I don't hear alot of bass heavy music but can pump 145 decibels if needed. (done by myself and no, I don't compete)
What i'm suggesting to you is to look at what kind of music you listen and tailor your system off of that. Or if you just want sounds that scream out of the window, work that route.
BTW, Great choice in Pioneer. My head unit and DSP are both Pioneer(7 years running and never failed me) Good Luck

QcMarque- im thinking about a $179 deal from circuit city on the Pioneer DEH-P4900IB deck with the 200w Rockford Fosgate T1692C speakers
elsabor67- good point i like to hear the voice in a crisp sound but also like heavy bass with my hiphop/rap/rock/regeatton i like my music in style when i ride

Nice choice on the headunit, newer unit, nice design - simplistic and functionable. I'm not familiar with the speakers, though RF has some nice units. I personally am partial to Phoenix Gold (I have the Xenon series amplifiers - X200.4 & X1200.1 and speakers/subs - X5.0 components all the way around, and 2 X12d4 subs), though I have a JVC KD-AVX2 headunit since I can not yet afford an AVIC-N2/3 unit.
Honestly on the speaker size though, I've had VERY nice results from 5.25" components, never really cared for 6x9s - as elsabor said, they tend to give a harsher sound (distorted) at higher volume levels, at least that's been my experience.
^^^Due to the fact that they're non-concentric, they tend to exhibit cone distortion particularly at high power levels. IMO 6x9's should be left in the 70's & 80's before subs became popular, but to each his own.

yeah. Im thinking about just going w the 5.25. it sounds more logical to me, plus buying the 6x9s would cost a heap more.

Mine are Phoenix Gold X5.0 convertibles, I got 2 sets for I believe $75/ea on eBay quite some time ago. Each set of course comes w/ 2 mids & 2 tweets, & 1 active crossover. Here's a pic of one mid & tweet installed in my originat rear deck mounts:
