How to turn off inspection lights??

Hi,
My husband is going to change my oil, etc and we need to know if the inspection lights (small orange boxes and a clock) will re-set themselves or we have to do something to re-set them?

They won't reset themselves, you need the reset tool which sells for about $70 at Bavauto and/or Pelican Parts. There are some DIYs using small jumper wires but you risk causing more problems. Some BMW dealerships will reset them for you if you provide a receipt (for the parts) but many won't.

With the ignition switch at (position two) and the engine not running, grounding pin seven (7) of the diagnostic connector for approximately three (3) seconds will reset the oil service lights. Grounding pin seven (7) for approximately twelve (12) seconds will do an inspection service reset.

Hi,
Thanks for that. What is the grounding pin seven and where do you find it? Also where is the diagnostic connector? Sorry for being an egg but we need to know as I have always had it out-serviced but this time we will do it.

take a piece of household electrical wire strip both ends to expose approx 1inch of bare wire.
remove the lid of the diagnostic connector insert one end of the wire into pin hole #7 and insert the other end of the wire into pin hole #19 turn on your ignition to position 2(do not start the engine) so all the ignition lights are on go to straight the engine bay and remove the wire after 3 seconds that will have reset your service light.

or look here http://www.unofficialbmw.com/repair_faqs/sil.html

wthcly: The diagnostic connector is located in the engine bay. But if you have any uncertainty at all about the procedure, DO NOT do it. Although it's quite simple, one wrong connection and you could end up frying your engine's computer (ECU). You can live with the lights not being reset, but you can't afford to fry the ECU. This is why c1apton did not advise you to do it; sometimes if we're not sure of the person's abilities/experience, giving advice can do more harm than good.

if you are at all unsure or uneasy about doing the above then leave it to a more experienced mechanic /technician, I wouldn't like to think I gave the advice that screwed your ECU.

Or get the reset tool from Peake or Bavauto. They aren't very costly, and they will certainly to the job right.

I picked up a reset tool last year and I must say that it comes in handy and I would rather do it with the tool then risk frying electronics.
