How to change your side mirror glass.

Hi All, thought I'd share this with you:

Has THIS ever happened to your mirror ???

1. Of course, you'll need to purchase your glass mirror from a source. I got mine from:

Pacific BMW
4648 San Fernando Rd.
Glendale, CA 91204
1-800-909-PART

If you call them on thier 1-800 line, you may not get a quick answer... maybe it was just me, but calling them on the other lines will give quicker answers. Have your model information with you and make sure that your getting the correct glass, ie, heated, etc.
(You dont' have to get it from them.... there are other sources out there.)

Ok, now it's really simple, but don't forget, your dealing with glass so you should be a bit careful.

2. Get some sort of lever, I read somewhere that you could use a screw driver, wrapped in thick tape to prevent any damage to your mirror's trim.

3. Now stick that lever into the bottom edge of the mirror glass.

Carefully pry the glass out towards you. Being that it is cracked and flexible at this point, it may behoove you to wear safety glasses. It doesn't take alot of effort, just enough to loosen the clips holding in the bottom edge. Once loose, it'll just pop right out.

4. Get the new glass and align it so that the electrodes for the heated mirror option (if you have that) are aligned to the wires in the mirror assembly.

Now, plug them. If you have pudgy fingers like me, hold the mirror in your left hand and use your right to plug them in (assuming your installing the driver's side mirror, if passenger, opposite).

5. Now just jimmy it in until it's firmly in place.

WALLA! All done! Simple eh?

Hope this helps someone in the future, Good Luck! (not that you'll need it),

Dough

Awesome. Actually the glass on one of my mirrors is loose and vibrates/shakes while I'm driving. I wonder if I can pry it off and put it back on to fix the problem.

humm... could be one of those little plastic clips on the back of the mounting plate. Then again, it could be different in your E36. I should state that this is for an E46, maybe it doesn't matter...

I have 1987 635csi which i am try ing to put back to showroom condition
and recently I noticed my passenger mirror swing freely in the wind I can see a threaded black nipple going up into the chrome casing and I wondered if there was a nut holding it that may have come off or is this a major thing ?
Having had yours apart do you remember when the glass was out what held the chrome part on ?
I suppose I need to remove glass to look without breaking it ! any ideas welcome
