Bumped, in case some haven't seen this thread yet, and want to make suggestions/corrections. I know it's a lot to read, but I think we should get it right before Komodo adds it to the Knowledge Base. I made a few changes myself this morning, anyone else?

Bump, I'd really like to get this finalized so I can add it to the knowledge base.

Any suggestions/recommendations?

^^^ Yes, run it by your mechanic, if he hasn't read it already. zeit00 seems to know his shit, and I'd like to know if he sees anything that needs correction.

EXCELLANT INFO "D-man" - you have done your homework & it shows!
I'm glad to see DIY promotion, most of these things can be managed by owners (with proper tools) Especially when they do get their hands dirty they really appreciate the quality that goes into their cars.
RE: BMW bushings, they're considered a normal wear item like tires, wipers, etc.. they are the "weak link" in your handling and get used & abused more often because we tend to push them harder then most other car brands. Thus lack of common complaint failure from other manufacturers.
Keep pumping the good info

^^That's why it doesn't bother me when I have to replace bushings- they exist for a reason . . I'd rather have them go than some more important costlier part

Hey thanks man! Don't forget the Guibo going out.. Which seems to shred, sometimes with no vibration being made.

Nice work, I definately will be looking at my water pump, rear shock towers, radiator, and front outer ball joints. I have an E36 problem that may or may not be just mine, so here goes:

anyone else, if you have this problem, please tell me: my 99 328ic (e36) with 80,000mi has a plastic lip that runs along the front lip of the convertible top headliner. It's right where the convertible top meets the windshield. The lip is held in place in front by tongue & groove construction, and the headliner is fastened to the rear by screws & washers, and the sides are held to the convertible top frame by clips with retainer pins. The clips and the lip look like they're one integral piece when made, so despite my multiple attempts to glue them back into place (and wait 12-24 hours before reinstalling the lip), they keep breaking. It's really annoying when you have to hold the lip in place when putting the top up...I love my car, and this problem is bothering me. Anyone else having this problem or know of a bmw junkyard in sc, nc, or ga?

Regarding Steering, my Steering Rack has play in it and needs replacing. My 99 318is coupe is on 114,000 miles now.

Also, my nearside rtab went at about 90,000.

Thank You!

Thank you for this post. My electric windows and sunroof stopped working inexplicably; I was pulling my hair out trying to find the cause. I even broke down and took it to an "automotive electrical" shop with no luck (at least they had the decency to not charge me after they realized they didn't have a clue). Problem solved after replacing the comfort relay as indicated in your post! Hopefully, I can keep her going for another 230,000 miles.

I was never able to properly align my '93 325i. Just resigned myself to uneven wear of the front tires (no caster adjustment). However, I recently found Powerflex front control arm bushings in the Bavarian Autosport catalog with the OFFSET hole. Easy to install by the DIY'er. The hardest thing was getting the old pressed-in bushings out. My alignment is now perfect!
