Repairing climate control unit

for those of you who have obd2 cars with climate control, listen up!

recently my climate control has been acting all crazy, turns on by itself, turns off by itself, turns on and off really quick, the screen sometimes goes dim and none of the buttons work, it'll work for a few minutes then shut off, this sort of thing, well i took a look at the fuses to see if one of the ac ones was messed up, well the fuses looked fine, and then i took it to the shop, the mechanic took a look he said power was going to it but it was malfunctioning he said you'll have to order a new one for 400 bucks, and i said well could you install it, he says yeah but we have to take the whole dash out and it'll take 2 and a half hours, well this made me quite upset, money is really tight now and there's no way i could throw down this kind of money to fix it, sooooooo i used the interweb to do some research

and this is what i found

http://www.macadamizer.com/bmwfix.html

yes that's right with 50 cents and some patience you can fix it yourself

and that's what i did today

thought i'd share with the rest of you, the climate control is working perfectly now, i'll keep you guys updated if anything happens but looks good so far, DON'T LET THE DEALER RIP YOU OFF!!!

yeah thats pretty common, that happens on the stock radios too.. gets all dim and the dealer wants to replace it but all it is is some pos elecrical transistor or something made in china on the inside.

ps. y would you take you car to a dealership

Storamin 08-07-2005 01:01 AM

Didn't komodo do this a little while back?

i didn't take it to the dealer, i had to pick up my dad from meidas, and we asked them to look at it, they said take it to the dealer because the unit was bad, and so i called and asked how much parts and labor was to change it, i don't know, did he? i had no idea about this issue until it happened to me, people need to be made aware of it, i would hate for someone to get ripped off

Spieluhr 08-07-2005 06:06 PM

did that a while back as well. has worked perfectly ever since. Glad to hear it helped you dude. And that is really a GREAT write up.

komodo 08-07-2005 07:16 PM

Yep, someone got my thread link before I saw this. I did it about 2 weeks ago and it worked great. AC has been working strong everyday since without a single problem.

'96 328ic. Never knew why my heater always blew hot air on my feet even with the CCU off. After it went down hard I did this fix and even the hot air issue resolved. This is an easy fix. The most difficult part for me was cleanly removing the old capacitor. Ended up using sewing needle to do a pilot hole. The directions and pictures on 'macadamizer's website are great.
