How do I read a wiring diagram ?

Hi all,

I am retrofitting a OBC on a Compact. I have all the bits, including the BMW wiring loom kit and the BMW installation procedure.

And now for my problem - it tells me to connect one group of wires to the "fan connector box" at locations "x182, X183, X188, X1182, X1019 and X1067"

How on earth (or where) can I find out where these references refer to ?

I have a reasonable idea but want to be sure because the procedure says that wire colours may have changed and so, stick to the codes

If you d/l the WDS then you can see all the locations and color codes for your car (UBc Member FTP on the bottom of my sig) If I werent't at work I'd just look it up - but it's a handy program to have (need a DVD burner to put it on disk though) If you don't have access to a DVD burner or something to load the ISO and run the program on your PC I'll see if I can look it up and post screenshots when I get home (will be after 2am PST.) Best of luck, let us know how it turns out!

Hi again,

4gb later and I completed the download. Unfortunately, mine is an E36 Compact. However, that aside, I still wasn't able to find anywhere where it showed how the location numbering followed within the fan connector box - i.e. how would I know which connector was X183 ?

I don't see anything for a 2000 E36 Compact 316i... everything I see shows the E36 ended in '99 and was replaced by the e46. I do have an ETM that says 2000 e36/7, but it's basically the z/m series. I'll put it here

I guess my Compact was one of the last off the production lines.

I already have this wiring diagram but I'm still left with the dilema of where these connections actually are.

In particular, I have brown/orange cables which are to be connected to the brown/orange earth cables. However, all cables I can find are brown Only. They should connect into the fan connector X10009. How can O possibly identify location X10009.

What makes me want these details so specifically is because the instructions I have are for a LHD but mine is RHD. I don't know whether electrics have been swapped from side to side

Have you asked your local dealership for a copy of the schematic(s) you need? Most of them will make a copy/printout of whatever you need... that's all I can think of at the moment.

As far as wiring changed between LHD and RHD - shouldn't be a difference. I can put up the schematics for the E36 from '99 for you, see if that'll make a difference. If you look through the '00 E46 schematics on the WDS you d/l it doesn't have most of the connectors you're looking for... so I'm not quite sure where to go from here other than asking the dealership. I'll see what else I can find after I get back from lunch here in a couple hours.

Best of luck!!

It would appear to me that when i says that something is behind the glove compartment on a LHD, I think that it will be behind the glove compartment on the RHD, even though all electrics go through the bulkhead and the left hand side of the car (as you sit in it or down the right when looking at the engine from the front bumper)

for the most part yes things should be in the same spots (behind glove box, under driver's side of dash, etc.), though I believe certain items may be in particular areas. Check where it says first... then check the opposite if it's not there.
