Heres the funny thing that nobody bothered to check before writing that article:
That first Alpina? Thats IN CANADA. It has a British Columbia License plate on it. It was for sale in Vancouver a few years back.
Also, Canada has gotten a few models that the US never saw, as our Emissions standards in the 90's were similiar to that of Europe. In 1995 we got the M540i, limited to 32 models and is an offical M Car made by BMW M Gmbh. We also got the 1994 Euro-Spec M3. BMW made 45 Euro Spec M3's available to Canadian customers, exactly as they would be if ordered in Europe. Only 44 made it to Canada as one was damaged during shipping.
