Best M3: E46 M3... as much as I like the E30, E46 is a beast.
Best M5: E34 -- It just has something sexy about it... plus it's rare. E28 has the same coolness factor, but E34 is a little better performer, which is why it takes the first place. E60 and E39 are amazing machines and will outperform those 2 other M5s, but it's not all about speed...
Best series: 3... affordable, great handling, etc.

M3 - E30
The point of the M badge is to denote dedicated attention to performance. The E30 M3 is the best example because the chassis is already pretty stripped-down, and you don't get wood grain or an automatic until the E36. It's a go-kart with a roof, it's stayed truer to its roots than the newer models.
M5 - E34
Apart from being the best-looking 5-series ever made, the E34 isn't as flabby as the E39 or that other chassis I forbid my hands to type. I know the newer cars produce way more power, but they're using gigantic motors (by BMW standards anyway) and have become too cushy and round. The E34 is a sports car where the others are luxury sedans.
Series - 7
They've yet to make a 7 I wouldn't love to spend a year's salary on. The 7-series has always been a sexiful combination of elitist Jag-ish luxury and incredible earth-shaking power. They've always stood right on the line between a romantic dinner and sex; spacious and accomodating, with the heart of a musclebound champion. They even made them with turbochargers and manuals in Europe!
CSL - Huh?
Did they actually make a lightweight E30 M3? I thought it was just the E36 and E46 for the 3-series..in which case I'd vote for the E46, because as much disdain as I harbor for their size, and even though it weighs three thousand pounds with a cardboard trunk floor, it's just so fast.

M3 - e36
I have loved the e36 m3 for years and will continue to do so for the rest of my life. Now granted the e30 m3 is the most trusted for performance means and i would still give my left big toe for one. But the e36 has something more, i think it is one of the most attractive cars bmw ahs ever made, you can mod the shit out of it, and it performs like a dream right out of the box while still being a comfortable car to drive.
M5 - e34
I love the e34. Last 5 series to hold onto the more rigid body style, and they can perform like gods. The e34 m5 is easily one of the most beautiful m5's bmw has come out with.
Series - 6 series
I love the 6 series. not the new 6 series, the old one. My dad has an 87 L6 and i will not be happy till he repairs the damn thing, i remember when that thing ran and it could haul so much ass and handle like a beast.
CSL - e46
Watch the episode of Topgear that i think Jr posted in the multimedia section of the e46 CSL. that thing is fucking incredible. It sounds amazing, is faster than a bat out of hell, and is performance at its best, it doesn't even have AC for crying out loud, and the boot floor is made out of cardboard.
850CSI
The 850CSI sucks. Because I don't own one!

M3, E30 Just for looks and balance.
M5, E60 gets my vote for being an all round performance car with 4 seats.
5 Series is the best as you will struggle to get a better car bang for your buck.
850CSi, you obviously haven't had one. They look nice, but they are a money pit when they break down. There is virtually no common part with any other BMW. Any 8 series in fact.
My favourite one is the one I'm driving on the day.
