I think the nomenclature problems will catch up with BMW arounf 2032, when they debut their 10.0L, V16 flagship 7 Series sedan. WHat will you call it then?

Oh, and 150i ftw

Your knowledge of engine design and history is evidently poor. That can be solved using the power of teh Google and HowStuffWOrks.com

I test drove one about 5 months ago! The looks, style and performance are amazing.

Your talking only .08 seconds of a difference 0 -60 mph and almost $18,000.00 less than an M3, with a much more comfortable ride.

If I were in the market for a 3 series I would buy the 335i in a heart beat!

I'm sorry, by "I thought that was a Japanese trend of the 90s that was made obsolete by effecient modern single turbos." I meant "That was a Japanese trend of the 90s that was made obsolete by effecient modern single turbos." A single factory turbo on a new BMW is overkill. Two is just retarted. If someone wants to install them aftermarket, that's a completely different story. So, why's it called the 335? That makes as much sense as the 745s of the 80s with 3.5Ls.

^^ This is a biturbo model, with one turbine for each bank of three cylinders. The idea is to virtually eliminate turbo lag and make the power band smooth. The turboes are not stacked back to back as you would see on some Japanese cars (pretty much all of which are excellent).

335i is just a name. If you are so bothered with the name, I guess you never liked the 1.9L 318, or the 2.5L 323, or the 2.0L 318i, or the 2.2L 320i, or the 4.4L 545, 745, and 645. YOu probably have a big problem with the 4.8L 550, 650, and 750. There also are 3.0L 325s and 525s.

WIthin the E90 range, we already had the 325 and the 330. Both the two new offerings have 3.0L engines. In order to distinguish them from the existing models (which both have 3.0L engines), the entry level borrows a name BMW has already used in the 328i and uses the new badge of 335 to distinguish the turboed version. BMW has had models with the -35 suffix for a while on both gasoline and diesel engines. In the 90's, BMW started using the -35td and -35d to identify their 3.0L turboed engines.

Again -- it is just a name.

WHat do you mean by this whole overkill and retarded business?

You just said earlier in teh thread that you hate to see engines getting bigger and bigger. With the turbo setup, BMW is getting 300 bhp out of a 3 liter engine for less money than they would have to spend to get that same power NA. Then you can remap the engine managemnet system and boost your HP to over 350 for relatively cheap.

Instead of going up to a 3.5L to compete with the IS350, G35, and whatever MB is making these days, BMW decided to keep their engine small and get power a different way.

ohandbytheway, the 2008 model year will feature the 528i and 535i, for your pleasure.
