BMW to add stop-start engine system in 2007
FROM AOL:
BMW to add stop-start system in 2007 Autocar reports that BMW plans to launch its Automatic Engine Start/Stop System next year - one of the fuel economy and emissions reduction components of its "Efficient Dynamics" technology package, as the company aims to meet its commitment to the European Association of Automobile Manufacturers 2008 CO2 emissions reduction targets. Officially called "Auto Start/Stop," the system automatically switches off the engine when the car comes to a standstill. As soon as the driver puts in the clutch or depresses the gas pedal, the engine restarts automatically. BMW's "Intelligent Software" links together the various sensors required with the starter motor and the alternator control to make the process work. Auto Start/Stop, along with BMW's High Precision Injection (lean-burn direct injection) and Brake Energy Regeneration technologies, will appear across a broad model range, with the Start/Stop technology to be introduced in four- and six-cylinder 1-, 3- and 5-Series models. |
so the engines turns off everytime you come to a complete stop? i dont like that, wonder how long it takes from startup to when you can start moving. . .
Not long, there's no lag whatsoever. A few hybrids already do that. My friend's Honda Insight does, pretty freaky, DEAD SILENCE. I always say "dude- your car died" :D
The article is probably wrong tho- on autos it should restart as soon as you get off the brake, and it's up and running before you can get on the gas. For manuals it starts as soon as you touch the clutch, before you even press it down. And the starter is more sophisticated- there's no cranking up the engine. On a similar note, I was told BMW is coming out with a V-10 that switches to 5 cylinders to save gas? |
Me too. Imagine during traffic jam. It's not practicle.
i dont like it. it best come with an off switch.
It would obviously save on gas and pollution. But wow kinda hard on the battery I guess :dunno
i think it would damage the engine more? I mean it start and stops so many times in just one day...
It doesn't work like that. The electronics stay on, and the whole system, including the engine, is designed to work differently than what you're used to driving. Don't think of it as a retrofit to existing technology. It's all new digs, man, pretty cool if I say so myself. I'll try to get a video from inside the Honda one of these days, so you guys will understand :)
so it is hybrid or hybrid like? i didnt get that from the article, but now that i think about it, that is what it sounds like. i see why alternative fuel and fuel saving stuff is necessary, however i really dont like it.
ok whoa. i kinda liked how bmw only used NA engines. . .
That's all nice and cool, but I prefer to have the engine on even when I'm stopped ...
As if the current model BMWs weren't electrical nightmares already, they now plan on adding even more shit to break. And since when did BMW really start to give a flyin' fuck about fuel economy? If someone can afford a BMW they can afford the 20mpg instead of the 22 they will get by saturating cars with electronics. |
BMW would probably integrate an oil pressure preservation tank that would allow for pre pressurised oil systems on startup. That would help alot with the damage associated with startups. I don't like the idea however, I just hate turning my car on and off if I am only going to be stopped for real quick time intervals.

:dunno
not sure about that idea..... ~*Teg*~ |
What's new that we're talking about?
Ohhhhhhh Quite interesting. |
