I'm sorry, i gotta say something. Who says that just ebcause their trying to be more eco friendly that they must be lowering themselves to compete with toyota and honda. It would be more accurate to say theat the company is changing with the times and the changes are reflecting what potential customers are looking for on a global scale. Now here in teh us gas isn't that bad, but gas in Europe is rediculous and the wealhy upper class and upper middle class are the only ones that can afford a car at all, let alone a BMW.

the important thing to remember is BMW sales on a global basis and the fact that owning a car at all is a status symbol all throughout europe and other parts of the world, and even the wealthiest of the wealthy in those countries are firced to be conscious of fuel consumption.

The average price of gas today in amsterdam was $7.13 per gallon compared to a national Average of $2.61 in the united states

you could claim that thats because of taxes, which it is, but those prices still change daily jsut as ours do.

and here's a scarier thought. theres a bill on the table in the U.S. senate that would add a $2.00 per gallon tax on all fuel sales in the united states. so add $2.00 to each gallon of gas you paid for today and ask yourself, could i afford that price at the rate at which i currently use it?

This was a list of national averages back in March....

notice the price in countries where they export and don't import at all.....

BTW, for comparo, in march, the average US price of gas was $3.18

Hear, here! Nice one, chris I know we're primarily a tuning forum, but no one has said (yet) that performance will decline as a result of this new technology. And you have to remember that this will be put into the economy bimmers, not the brute and powerful ones. And they haven't said if it would be standard on all units produced, or if they will also have a traditional motor option. So I think we're jumping the gun here. I'm gonna keep an open mind about it. It's one of those things that you really have to see in person to fully grasp, so next time you see an Insight, pay close attention to how it behaves at a red light. It's not gonna pull hard off the line because it's a 3 cylinder and a true hybrid, neither of which the BMW's will be. But you can get an idea of how it starts up and shuts down. Plus, the regenerative braking reduces parasitic drag on the engine. I think it's gonna be like the Bangle debate; you may hate the idea at first, but it might just grow on you

**sorry for the constant Honda references, it's the only car equipped with this system that I have experience with**

also, keep in mind that starter systems of this nature are vastly different from conventional starter motors. The starter motor in a hybrid will spin the engine to about 1,000 RPM, rather than just a few hundred, before the engine introduces fuel and spark.

point taken. There are two sides to everything. IMHO i would purchase a BMW for pleasure and not economy.

i got a question.

so in motors where they "turn off" a few of the pistons, does that mean that they are just dead weight while the other half are still working?

i think i already know the answer, but thought i would ask anyway

No, it's just like the 318, but at least it's a proper gas guzzler.

Thats wierd, I agree with torque, WTF does BMW care about fuel economy, rich people will still buy their cars, Its not like they will lose sales...
