Too expensive and not much gain at all compared to what you would've gotten from the M3. An intake/chip alone will get u MAYBE 6hp on the 330 whereas the output from the M3 is already ahead of the 330, mods will just add that much more to it. Besides, M3's are "classic" cars as they mature. "Normal" cars, well, they just get old (with exception here and there).

Turner motor sport took a stock 330 and supercharged it, suspension, etc. I think it was in bimmer magazine. It turned out incredible. They can be modified, at an expense. You could try and get a euroversion M3, that would be sick. Otherwise, go for the 330. I don't think FI is ever wasted on a non M car. As a matter of fact, I would believe that a FI M motor will tend to be unreliable in the long run. The M engines are already tuned, then to add FI, you are asking for problems with reliability.

But when you add FI, you retune it.

Would an e46 be harder to work on, or are they fairly similar to e36's?

Hmm.... there are more E46 DIY things in there... small ones. I guess they aren't worthy of being in the DIY section?
