1997 528i

I have a 1997 528i. Manufacture date, 07 of 97. I neeed to put a transmission in it. Found one from a 1999 (Maunfacture date, 09 of 99) 323i with 15k on it, torque converter included for $300 from a part out. Same model number transmission, A4S 310R. The dealer tells me it is not compatible, but it's the same model transmission, 4 speed, same M52 motor, same fluid capacity, will bolt right up, looks identicle. What risk is involved here? Is there an electrical issue I may run into? If no one convinces me that it will work, I am just going to have mine rebuilt, but thought I would try this first.

Welcome to United Bimmer. The transmission should bolt up. The engines used in the 5 Series was the same as those used in the 3 Series. If the transmission numbers are the same then I don't see why it wouldn't work. How much is the cost of a rebuild? Both will require the engine being removed from the car. With a rebuild the car will be out of service for a longer period of time.

2k on a rebuild, not too bad. Turn around time by Badger Transmission is about 3-5 days. I have used them before and they do quality work. But if I can turn this car around with a $300 transmission with 15k on it and $400 install I'm way ahead.

In my opinion, I would go with the "new" trannsmission. I couldn't justify spending $2,000 on a rebuild. If the one you found for $300 only has 15k on it then thatwould be my first option. At least if it doesn't mate up you'll be able to sell it for just as much if not more money.

Yeah, that transmission is worth at least twice that. Thanks.

I did notice the 1999 323i has a VK code while the 1997 528i has a TJ code. Not sure what this means.

Possibly different style of trannsmission or different manufacturer. Thei trannsmissions were made by two different companies. A copy of the Bentley Service manual is available for your reference at the top of the 5 Series section.
