what is up with my car?
ok i have a question for yall. tonite i was racin a 97 camaro ss with a 350, headers, exhaust, and intake. the first race was from about 50 and i had it in auto (yes i have an automatic. his car is auto also). he pulled on me the first time slowly at about 80 and i backed off. i pulled up to him again at 45, hit the M button, put it in second, and floored it. to my surprise we stayed neck and neck up to about 95 or 100 until we passed a cop and i had to run. what i want to know is if it is possible that my car is stock. its a 325is so it is supposed to have in the range of 180 hp. shouldnt his car have taken me easily? what r your theories of waht maybe done to my engine. or is his car just slower than i thought? thanks
derek

BMW isnt only about the horsepower, its about the power to weight ratio, the region in the RPM spectrum where the most torque is, and how evenly the torque is spread out

The main thing I think is the valve train. Pushrod valve train slow up in the higher rev ranges and that gives your overhead cam valve train an edge

Hm... unless the guy wasn't giving it all it's got, I don't think it's possible for you to even hang with him.

Moving this to General BMW cause it's not off topic... it's about a bmw, your car.... but it doesn't really fit in kill stories or e36. Haha
And on topic, bimmers are very balanced cars. It's not all about brute HP like in some cars. For instance when I first got my car, I held with my friend's slightly modded gt. (since then we've both done more modding and now he rapes me though... lol) I didn't think I'd stand a chance against him, but bmws can be surprising (in good ways).

its possible that your car has a chip in it. Otherwise there isn't much that could be done without you noticing it.
What everyone else said is correct. BMW's are very well rounded. Not just brute power, but power to weight ratio is very good, and they are geared correctly to fit their power and torque curves. So at higher speeds they shine brightly. Unlike chevy's that are generally geared for low speed acceleration
