Winter and Summer wheels?
 

AM wondering what is the point behind winter and summer wheels?

Well when u get rims like urs they usually become ur summer wheels. The stock ones thent to become ur winter wheels cause in the winter your rims are subject to all kinds of bad stuff like grime and road/rock salt which isnt usually good for your car in general. With 2 sets of rims you dont have to buy new tires each season, just switch the rims when it starts to snow, but u live in NC so im not sure u have to worry bout much snow.

Allright here is the deal with winter and summer wheels. I have 2 sets of wheels the originals and my current wheels. The originals go on in the winter with snow tires, because it does snow in Michigan, and the level of control goes way up with these tires in the bad weather conditions. In addition this way I do not get my nice summer wheels all screwed up from the snow/salt/potholes and other things that come with snowy roads. I then have the summer wheels and tires that are gripier and sexier and I dont have to worry about those conditions and I get the grip and other preformance gains. I would agree with Death that your in NC and it probably barley ever snows there so you can probably use a more preformance oriented tire for most of the year and thus dont need to worry about a second set of wheels.

I mean, I still have my older rims, and it does snow for about 2-4 weeks here, last winter was pretty bad....

At the end of the day if you run your original rims in the bad weather and twat them up a kerb when you lose it on the ice it's not as bad as twatting your Pimp 18's on a kerb - Kapish?

gotta, main reason I was asking this was to know if I should keep my oe rims or sell them, but I think I'll keep them.

Which gives me the opportunity to work on making a rack for them :D

Theres really no point in selling the 15 inch rims, no one will pay more than like 50 for them, and theyre worth more than 50 to the person who owns them, cause they can be used in the winter..

That one is easy. Drive to Michigan just one time with your current purty wheels and tires. While you are in that deep ditch looking up at the rest of the world pass you by..., the reasons will eventually come to you. Actually. That trip off the road in the Rockies as you attempt to make to Michigan will most likely do a better job of showing you. You just won't be able to enjoy the benefits of your new insight.

One good reason for winter wheels is to fit more narrow tires for the snow. Wider tires are no good in snow.

Well that explains why there are wide winter tires for vets and the like...., I never knew.

Yeah, by now (3 years from when I posted this :lol) I have understood the reasoning behind it. I guess I just can't relate to it since I live in an area that doesn't get "that much" snow

String theory in action. They do transend time and space. Yet still the hilarity ensues..., as folks that have not the experience of four seasons driving are very entertaining to see when a low friction surface confronts them. Hell they are almost as funny as the clowns here in Chicago driving on 30, 35, 40, 45 series "all season" tires in the winter. Those people include our dearly beloved BMW brothers and sisters. I had to stop counting after twenty just for the freaking 7 series.
