a rather horrid noise! help!

I own a 318i SE touring 1999 S reg. I need to sell my car soon but the engine is making a rather dreadful noise on accerlation. The only way i could describe it is like a rattly chortle sort of noise and it sounds 'dry' - could this be oil related?

I am a complete novice when it comes to cars and before taking it to the garage wanted to know if there was anything I could look into as I don't want to get ripped off.
