Check the insurance rates for a 16yr old in the NE before you set your budget. DONT OVER PAY JUST CAUSE ITS A COOL CAR. If you wreck an E30 M3, as far as the insurance company is concerned, it was nothing more than a 20 year old import. Doesnt matter how cool the driver thoughtit was. And keep in mind that 1 in every three people total a car before they turn 21 and another 1/3 are involved in lesser accidents.

... And don't say you'll be careful and crap because I've totalled three cars (volvo XC90, Lincoln Navigator and a ford Taurus), none of which were even remotely my fault. never underestimate the potential of bad/unattentive drivers in bad road conditions)

Pick something cheap and safe that will keep you alive, that way you're alive long enough to enjoy a REALLY cool car once you get out of college.

I would steer away from the rx-7 they aren't very safe. Go German, you could get very nice E30, E36, E34. Like the others have said don't spend the whole pot on the car, you will wreck...I didn't think I would but I wa sure wrong, and my german car sure did save my life.

btw, jap cars: ever looked at a Nissan 300ZX? Twin turbo, 'bout 270 hp, get them almost for free here

(3500 Euro)...check for US prices

You'll be pretty safe in a Volvo, but I don't think a young guy like you would want to be seen in one...lol The 850R is the ultimate touring wagon!

HAHAHAHAHA, your kidding right. I consider myself a very good driver and capable but a car with 500hp I would have to take so much time to learn to drive properly fast. You would be much better off getting something with lower HP and learning how to drive the wheels off of it (READ BMWCCA DRIVERS SCHOOLS AT THE TRACK) to start with, you will have a lot of fun and be surprised how capable a lot of cars are. You will also be a better driver in the future and be able to be smooth, then get a higher HP car and apply what you know and you will be much better. You will also be safer going this route and starting with a lower hp car will probably keep your insurance rates lower (even if they will be sky high since your young, mine still are 25 can't come soon enough). If you learned how to drive say a stock e30 325is or 318is at the track at its limit with no modifications when you start adding mods my god, you could drive like superman, spend that initial $350-400 you want to spend on mods and do a drivers school instead, it will be a ton of fun and make you oh so much better and SAFER.

first, +10 to craig about the 325iX.

second, i'm offended that you claim that you cannot find a decent BMW for under 10k. i'm sure many, if not most, on this forum payed less than 10k for theirs (particularly E30s, E34s, and many E36s).

third, you can handle up to 500hp? BWAHAHAHAHAHA! ...nuff said.

finally, +1 to greentourer; my dad has an 850R (not the wagon, though). it's a blast - i used to drive it to school before i had mine.

hmm I dont think that would be true. You could get a decent e36, maybe an e34, or e39 too depending on what type of car.

10-15k can get you a really nice bimmer. I would find a nice E30 325is.

15 grand can buy you an E36 M3 in great condition. People around here will disagree with me, but a modded E36 M3 is too much for a 16 yr old with no solo driving experience whatsoever, let alone one who didn't learn to drive in a rwd car. A stock one, fine, but we all know you won't leave your car stock so dont front that you would.

A used accord coupe (2001ish) is a nice SAFE car that would be good for a first driver, you could get one for about 15 grand and its one of the safest cars on the road.

Heh.. When I first started driving I spun out in my car making a U turn onto a three lane road with traffic coming.. I think even a stock e36 m3 would be too much for any new driver. What about Audi? I don't think anyone said them yet.
