Dont like the 15,000 oil change. Question?
Just bought an 06 325i with 20,000 miles. I really feel uncomfortable with the 15,000 mile oil changes. Want to change every 7500. Called the Dealership and they want $120.00. Dealership told me it would void my warranty if someone else does it. I am just so used to my Brother being the Manager of a local Firestone and getting my oil changes at cost. Willing to buy the oil and have him do it. My question, if I get a BMW filter can they tell if I have changed it? Do they mark it somewhere or should I just go pay the $120.00 and forget it? I do want to get the tranny fluid changed at 30,000 Thanks in advance.

if it was me, there would be NO way i would pay $120 for a fuckin oil change. i would walk in there and tell them to shuv it up their ass.(iv done it before).
no, it will not void the warranty if someone does the oil change, thats actually complete BS, no car manufacture can claim exclusive rights to doing the maintenance on your car in order to have a valid warranty, but yea, get a filter, i think BMW uses mann or mahle and make sure you buy synthetic oil, first of all there is no way to tell if its not a BMW filter when you take it out(its gonna be covered in oil) and the original BMW filters, the mann / mahle are cheap anyway so you dont have to worry about paying to much for the filter. either way, you can go to the parts department and buy a filter there...

Thanks Guys, I think I will call another dealership and ask them. I too think the first Dealership is full of crap.
where do you live, may i ask?
It seems most of the dealerships in California are resonable about things like this. For example my moms Saab is under warranty...and they recommend 10k oil changes....but they tell us we should probably get one inbetween.
also another thing to consider is (assuming its like my E46..which im almost certain it is) that the oil change interval should be based on how u drive. The car recognizes how you drive and will tell you earlier whether or not you need to change your oil.
So although they set the E46 oil change cycle at a nominal lenght...the car will tell you to change the oil sooner if it recognizes your driving style as more aggressive or more stop and go..etc.

I do my own oil changes every ~3500-4000k miles, I use mobile1 0-40. And every 15k miles, I let the dealership do it, but I request them to use Mobile1 0-40. What they mean by "it will void your warranty" is, if at 15k miles you take it somewhere else, then yes. Otherwise, I HIGHLY doubt they could tell.

I get my oil changed at the local Firestone. I think it's something like $70 but they usually send me a $25 gift card in the mail so they do it almost for what it would cost if I did it. Resetting the oil service alert is no problem.

Thanks. So how long have you had your car, love it?
I've had mine for over a year now and I really love it. It's a big power upgrade from my old car, I had an auto 328is. But both cars always did and still put a smile on my face when I walk up to them.

Thanks. Will try Firestone. I went to BMW today and bought the oil filter and oil. The price was the same as the others but with the BMW logo on the bottle. Probably the the same stuff.
