The way I see it, neither one would exist without the other to compete against. Because lets face it, BMW is MB's only REAL competition, and MB is BMW's only real competition. If they were to merge, they would no longer be directly competing against each other, and we all know that what keeps these two companies so far out in front is that they're always trying to one up each other, while still staying profitable.
A merger like this would completely undermine the cyclical one-up-manship that is the very foundation of both companies success.

Sadly, they already sort of have that. I'm i'm even more saddened to say that except for the auto tranny (which still shifts faster than a manual anywhoo), MB has successfully built a car that rivals the next generation M3.
2008 C63 AMG

guys, I read in the german car mags that they are only thinking about developing a platform and/or a base engine together so that MB could get their A and B-Classes to be more efficient in production. I heard that other potential partners would be PSA (Peugeot) for example.
A "merge" will not happen.
Sorry to disappoint you

That makes more sense. Company's have been doing that for years. only a handful of company's today actually make their own engines (toyota contracts out all their engines.) anymore.

^^It's sad how true that is. Even with a 22 year old BMW that needs paint and some different wheels.

I was only half kidding. I've met many more snobby Mercedes owners than BMW and i've yet to see a group of Mercedes owners stand around a parking lot passionately talking about their cars.
Yeah there are BMW owners who just buy for the name and couldn't tell an e30 from Z3 but as a whole BMW has a much more enthusiastic group of owners than MB.
