E24 Purchase?
I caught sight of a BMW while going to the movies a few hours ago and decided to stop and have a look on the way back. I thought it was an E30...just caught the signature BMW headlights out of the corner of my eye. So when I got to the lot I thought it would just be another junk E30 like the rest I've looked at on that road before. I was glad to see it was a fairly nice E24. I took pictures on my phone and a video that covered the entire car but I was unable to get the computer to read the video file so here are the pictures.
I didn't take many pictures since I had the video but I wish I would have now. It has 2 rust spots on the driver door, one in the middle and one in the bottom corner near the hinge. The right rear fender has bubbled up places on it and the black trim right under the headlights is worn and torn a bit. Other then that it looks to be in pretty good shape. No price was on it but I'm calling tomorrow to get the price and I might be test driving it then or on monday. I hope I can work something out and get it, it would be nice to fix up and restore to its glory, except for changing to the euro bumpers of course. Thought I would share and see what you all thought, I'm pretty excited. I was hoping when I realized it was an E24 that it would be a 633 CSi, but I can live with a 630
^^^You're referring to the TRX style wheels, but they were used in the 80's. This 630 should have standard 14" alloys AFAIK.
The 630 was produced from '75-'79, and was not fuel injected; that's how old you're talking. Gonna be pretty tough and expensive to restore. The rust on the door is common, due to clogging of the door drains. Also, worn camshafts are a common occurence with the M30 engine.
The e24 is my all-time favorite Bimmer, but I've refrained from getting one because of the cost of restoration and maintenance. It's really up to you, but I'd recommend you pass up the 630's and 633's and find a 635 from the 80's.

I thought the 630CSi was injected. From what I came up with one of the big attractors was that it came standard on it while it didn't on th 3.0....but thats just from my limited knowledge, I'll have to do more research. I would love a 635, but they go for around 12K and thats way outta my limit. I'm thinking about(if it doesn't run good) swaping out some parts from the E30 I'll be getting soon. I guess that depends on if the E30 is a junker or not, I might want to fix it up.
I'm not really looking for a second means of transport..I just don't know. I'm getting ready to leave and go check it out so I'll be back with a price and list of some of the other problems I find. Thanks for the info Dudesky.
Yes, you're correct, my bad. I left out the suffixes in my post . . the 630cs was not injected, while the 630csi was. Here in Jersey, I've seen many 635's starting around $4k, but they will need work. I guess how much you spend will pretty much determine how much work you have ahead of you . .

Yeah, I would like a good project car to have lying around to work on. A 635CSi would be awesome, yet none are for sale in my area, this is actually the first E24 I've ever personally seen.
I drove it and it runs good, it shakes a little at idle but nothing major. One concern I have and with what little knowledge I have I can't figure out right away is: I pulled on a dirt road to turn around and take it back and it died when I took it from reverse to drive? Started right up and ran fine. A/C doesn't work, not a big deal. The left rear fender is rusted a good bit and the right is on its was but its ok. The passenger door also has the rus spot found it the bottom corner but not as bad.
It has had two owners, a man that bought it new in 77(last year it was made, at adds a little appeal) and owned it until he died. Second owner got it at the estate sale. One thing I don't like is the fact that the second owner took out the 1,000 buck optional radio that the original owner ordered on it and replaced it. Took it with him so if I want any tunes I'll be getting a radio. The guy selling it said 2500, and then said everyone that had llokd at it so far had never seen anything like it and asked me if I had. I said yeah and spit out some tid bits about the 3.0 it replaced and 77 being the last year of the 630 and gave the line up from then until the 6 went out of production....he sttod for a sec and said I'll let it go for 1500 cash I'm sure I could have talked him down to that but it was more fun making him look like an idiot when he thought he was the only person who even knew what a 6er was.
I was wondering what if anything I could take from an E30 and put into it? Thanks everybody.
edit: Can you tuck those bumpers? I really hate the American bumpers, they are a complete joke on everything they were on.

Thats awesome. If things work out my uncle might be able to pick itup for me and bring it down here, he lives in PA. Thanks dudesky.... I've decided against getting the 630 anyway.
^^^ dont you have to drill a hole in the bumper shock to release the fluid first?
to be honest i dont know, however the bumper shock isnt exposed so you would have to take the bumper off, but ive always thought that the bumper shock was actually a spring... who knows...
