subaru had a constantly variable tranny in the Justy years ago.

it was basically two pulleys. as they spin faster, the halves seperated and the belt or whatever fell deeper into the pulley. when they seperated, basically the size of the "gear" became smaller.

constantly/continuously variable trannys are hardly a new thing. that what gets me about the nissan commercial with it.

CVTs have been around for a while. Audi uses them. Nissan uses them. They're not the only ones. Look it up on howstuffworks.com.
