That really sucks, but it does illustrate the importance of good driver training and learning to crawl before you run. When my son turns 16 he will be lucky if I let him drive at all. Which brings me to the point of another rant. I don't believe anyone should be granted a drivers license without taking a driving course. We could include it at the high school level and for those out of high school run it like the PA Motorcycle saftey course (which works very well) you take a 4-6 day course over 2 weeks with a vehicle and at the end of it you take a written and practical test which grants you a license. To fund the program they added $5 to the permit fee.
Perhaps a safety course wouldn't have stopped this kid, and perhaps a slower machine wouldn't have helped either, but anytime an accidenbt occurs it usually is a confluence of circumstances which lead to tragedy. If any one of the factors is mitigated it generally leads to a near miss.
in any case my heart goes out to his family, being a father I can't imagine the grief of losing a child and it really is one of my greatest fears.
