If he's a full blown "wrench" he should have adequate tools but the procedures for vanos is similar to surgery rather than pulling bolts, slipping in gasket. LOTS of adjustments & some specialty tools required.
Stuff like pulling followers & setting TDC (needs special tools). It's time consuming procedure to tear down & redo. Hope you have a manual or a certified BMW guy.
