735i Tranny problem
I bought a great looking 1990 735i from a gentleman that was going to send it off to the crusher. Engine purrs like a kitten and seems to be in overall great shape. Problem is it wont shift from 1st gear when in auto mode. Put it in manual mode and it shifts just fine 1 thru 3 but will not shift to 4th gear. Any suggestions on what I should do to troubleshoot or fix this problem. Like I said she is to pretty to send to the scrap yard.
Odds are the transmission fluid has never been changed. Your first step should be to get the OBD system scanned for codes. Most auto parts stores do this for free, so you dont have to go buy a scanner.
Some codes, including transmission codes dont always trigger a CEL. Its possible that a shift solenoid may have failed.

Well I looked for the ODB connector and come to find out there isnt one, go figure. I had to read the code from the flashing check engine light. It was code 1444 which is no fault codes.
So should I go after the shift solenoid or Speed sensor (someone else mentioned this to me).
Kinda lost at this point. May just have to find a tranny and replace the whole thing ....
Well if theirs no codes I'm not exactly sure what your best course of action is because it's hard to tell if anything is wrong other then by feel. I usually recommend changing the tranny fluid and seeing if this helps. NOT a flush but a change of the fluid and filter.
Kurd are available at several retailers including Pelican Parts and ECS Tuning.

Well it didn't solve the problem and I don't have any more cash to stick into it. So I am going to try and sell it. I appreciate the advice on my problem and look forward to posting on here in the future.
