That is because the M73 V12 never had a manual transmission attached by BMW in any form.

The M70/S70 8 series cars were the only V12s BMW built with a manual transmission. (S70= 850CSi)

The story is a rather stale copycat if you followed the Saga of Bimmerhead and Baby on Bimmerforums.

His supercharged 740 with a manual has run 1 Lap a couple of times already. IIRC it was shipped to Germany to run the German 2000 last year. It is faster than M5's and handles with the Porches already.

The BMW V12 has a very restricted exaust port. It makes a 90 degree turn directly above the exaust valve with half of the valve guide in the middle of the flow. There is not enough metal in the head to correct this.

The 4 valve M72 engine didn't get beyond prototype stage and BMW chose to build the 2 valve M73 (with the same problem) instead.

A cutaway of the M70 exaust port

I'm pretty sure a certain 6.1 liter V12 that powered the world's fastest car had a 6 speed.

actually, i think dynos makes mistake about 750 with automatic transmissions.
Here is my bmw 750i E38 dyno results http://e38.ee/bmw/dyno%20nitro%20130...%20rattast.jpg
dot-line is stock and line is with nitro (about +100hp)
Here is another stock 750 result http://www.robertlevinson.com/seven/...tock_750iL.jpg
almoust same, as mine stock
And here is with manual tranny http://www.robertlevinson.com/seven/..._PROJECT_X.jpg
Rob has changed tranny and output-intake folders(mybe +30hp) but manual transmission can't put more power to engine (dyno results was 290hp vs 335hp)

Here is some more pics and storyis bout my BMW http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2170697

I've picked up on this on a few sites where "iL" and "Li" are both used for the 750..typically you can see it backwards in euro models which strangely enough is what I ended up with(according to my carfax atleast)..But after first year production(96?) of that body style anyways, tiptronic transmission is perfected and yes it's not as fun as a six speed 750 but you get that manual feel thats awesome on tight cornering and the 1/4 mile.
