e32 transmission stuck in third gear
hello everyone,
since I bought my 1989 750il it keeps on going into safety mode, I have read through most of the threads and the most common one like my problem was changing the speed sensor inside the trany which I did today, it was not hard but done, unfortunately the problem did not go away. I don't know what to do anymore the car runs great except for the trany sticking in third gear. it is a beautiful car as mint as a showroom car with 96,000 miles.
please if anyone can help with any suggestions let me know. I went to the dealership and they want $106 per hour to diagnose and it might take 2 to 3 hours not counting parts and etc...
thank you.

It shouldn't take longer than an hour to get the codes and diagnose the "limp home" mode on the tranny. Repair? depends on whats wrong. You may want to look around for an independent in your area that specializes in BMW. The car's 11 years old so even being a BMW it shouldn't be THAT complicated to figure out and fix.......................

Thank you Big Evil for the reply, I will take it to get diagnosed and will let you know the results as it could help someone else with same problem. and by the way I also checked and did a few of your suggestions regarding sensors you mentioned in earlier threads, and it did make the car run better even though its sticking in 3rd gear, great job you do know your bimmers! Hope other members read your threads it will help them a lot.
god bless
to get your car out of trans program mode simply start it, shut it off in gear, and turn the key on and off 3 times(don't re-start it just key it on and off) with the car still in gear. put it in park with the key off and start the car , the dash should read "program trans" start the car and drop it in first quikly then drive in auto mode and maually shift the car until your in fouth gear , after about a mile it should reset and act normal again.I found this out by accident during a fuel pump issue , i keyed it off and on while driving and got stuck in third gear, after 20 minutes or so i fiqured it out and got the rest of my gears back.
