Just Bought a 94 740il

Hello, new here and hoping this is the place to help me. I just purchased a M60 engined car. Car is beautiful, engine not so good. I have a car that smokes sometimes, idles rough sometimes. Other times it suns smooth as a kitten and no smoke. Back cylinder on drivers side has black deposits like burning oil, rest are good and clean. Passenger side head has oil lieak apparently since there is oil around the spark plugs. Drivers side no problem.

So the question - any ideas as to what is going on with this car?

Thanks for your help

Bill

First Post so here goes,
Just bought a 96 740 il 173K miles upon driving it home noticed coolant was low added coolant and noticed oil floating on to of coolant in resevoir bottle. I was bummed as I bought the car as is. Was confused car does not smoke and there is no antifreeze in oil.

did a compression check values ranged from 90 psi to 140 psi average was 110 psi.
Any Ideas. waht is the compression for these cars supposed to be.
Thanks

I was just reading up on a few things. And I ran across some info pertaining to two different engines used on pre 97 models. It seems that BMW had an issue with our high sulfur fuel wrecking havoc with the alloy used in there engines. They changed the alloy in 96 to allow for our crappy fuel.,And the US started doing a better job on quality. There are ways to identify your engine in this forum. Good luck

Thanks for the input.
Since my last post, I've changed the engine. It turns out that blow-by oil was accumulating in the intake manifold, once it passed a critical quantity, it would dump into the cylinders and make prodigous amounts of smoke. Most of the time no smoke or roughness.

So now a new engine and I love this car!
