All of the BMWs that I have seen before have rather efficient and true cold air intakes. The aftermarket cone filters don't add anything but noise and warm / hot air.
A new OEM Mann or Mahle air filter flows more air than a K&N cone anyway. And it costs a lot less.

BMW makes a system and it is installed on your car. Look at the tubing and flow from the throttle body to the air filter, and then to the grill, the only thing you might want to do is add a free flow filter, but i am not sure that is worth the money, as you are only going to get 3HP to 5HP max.

Remember, that metal attracts heat, so any metal tubing will tend to warm the air flow, and hot air means loss of power. Look for plastic or fiberglass tubing if you are going to change the tubing out. My daily driver is a 1998 neon, DOHC, UDP,Camber Plates, Re-flashed PCM, short shifter and oh yes a home made CAI using PVC and a K&N filter with a pick up out of the engine compartment and down low just behind the grill.
