740il 1999 Computer Prob
The main control computer went crazy on my 1999 740il. Began by displaying trans prob, then shut off the speedometer and tach. Displayed brake (lining) and abs lights. Also shut down the a/c compressor (but not the fan). I disconnected the battery for about 30 min and reconnected. Same problems occurred. Took car to independent mechanic and his recommended transmission service company. The transmission company decided the transmission is fine. Looks more like something strange going on with the computer. loose wires? Bad chips? Only recent maintenance was to replace all brake pads. Does anyone have any ideas on this one?
Thanks!

Have your battery load tested...
Most of this random error thing seems to be battery related on all of the big BMWs prior to 2002. That is a MS windows problem in 2002 and 2003.
That is why the 8 series has two big batteries.

Battery?
Thanks, I am having the shop check the battery. It would be strange if that is the cause since it starts the car with no problem. Sounds like electronics wants to see a really pure voltage source!

Low battery after start is a common problem in the 8 and in the E32 740 that I had.
They start ok. But the battery voltage after the vigorous battery usage turning the starter is too low for the electronics.
Most common first sign of battery problems is the "Trans Prog" message and a shift into transmission safe mode. Random messages then follow.
If you drive the car a ways the messages go away as the alternator brings the voltage back up. Warm starts don't commopnly stress the battery any where near as bad either.
A load test is the only way to check if the battery has enough voltage left after cranking.
