Have you put gas in it since you got it?

Gas Gauge

Quite often the sign of a failing sending unit.

Sending unit is in the gas tank and if you set the trip odometer when you fill it up you should be ok for a while.

It may fix itself with a full tank of new gas dissolving the old varnish coating in the tank.
