The old addage of "It is better to have and not need, then to need and not have" comes to mind.
I visit friends in neighborhoods that I will NOT walk through at night without some defense item, and keep in mind I'm 6'7 300lbs. Think of it as an airbag, you don't want it to deploy on you, but you'll be damn glad when it saves your ass in the event of an accident.
