Unhappy 1979 633csi starter change?

HELP I recently purchased a 1979 633csi . I have to change the starter on it, but a mechanic friend of mine is telling me that I will need to drop the engine to do this! Is he correct?

no, hes not, it would be very nice and accessable if you did drop the engine, however it can be done(the starter for the 6 cylinders on all BMWS is very very similar) the way i suggest doing it is starting out with a LONG extension cord and pass it under the intake manifold
