This is exactly true . . . company X can pump 10,000 gals into the pipeline in Texas, but what they pull out in, let's say New Hampshire will not be their own. The lines are only seperated by octane rating.

And just to throw it out there, I've owned over a dozen cars in my driving life, and they all had problems with Exxon gas. Best performance I've gotten consistently was from Sunoco, but they're too expensive now. It's all about the additives and how they work with your particular car.
