I'm with Kraut & Catalyst. You need a car that runs good, and parts are cheap and readily available. Your life is gonna suck for the next few years if all your money is being dumped into your car. A turbo for a first car is a bad idea, IMO. And if you think BMW parts & labor is expensive, don't even think about a Porsche!
I agree 100%. Except for the fact that I have been dumping all my money into my car for the last 3 years and I love it.
*Look for a nice e30, but take your time. Save your money to make a nice down payment, maybe even buy the car w/ cash in full.
*Get a 5spd so that you can learn to drive one. When I bought my car I had never driven a manual before, and now I swear I will never own another automatic.
*As you learn more about the car you can start to mod it. Parts are expensive, but not compared to other BMW models. And you can get anything and I mean anything you want for an e30.
