Good question. My research indicates that everyone follows this procedure, including authorized BMW service centers. So I did it too, but no one seems to know why. It probably affects the alignment somehow. My best guess is that on earlier models, the width of the housing on the trailing arms were not up to spec. I wish I had access to a later model to compare.
