The possibilities depend on your budget. I have seen 19"s and 20"s on E39s. And I have seen guys go 10" wide and bigger. You should be able to fit a 9" wheel in the rear with no fender modification. 18"s should fit no problem. Especially of your stock height. A lot of people reckoned keeping it "squared" which means the same width all around for optimal performance.
