I have never seen one myself, but I know that the e36 convertible uses the battery as the mass on a vibration dampener mechanism. You have to buy a battery that will tolerate being shaken vigorously. I have read posts through the years from convertible owners complaining that the replacement batteries were hard to find and very expensive, and asking what would happen if they bought off-the-shelf batteries.
