I think that learning how to drive good has a lot to do with how much you know about cars, my family has pretty much always been into the car business, hence my knowledge on cars...
My uncle was the one who actually "taught" me how to drive, when I was ~12 he would take me into parking lots (yes they were empty) and at first would just tell em to drive so I wouldn't be afraid, later on he taught me how to turn at fast speeds, power braking... the all nine yards. Hence by the time it was for me to get my license, I was very confidant, and I mean, I always know what I am doing when am driving. And you'r absolutely right, some people think they can drive, but they can't... (by the way, what happend to your friend with the cougar?) But practice and experience is the key word....
