Question 1996 328is - Is this an EWS II problem?

Car ran fine until yesterday night. On the way to work in the morning, temp and fuel gauges stopped working and brake light circuit error appeared on OBC. Looks like that is fuse related. Car kept running fine. No check engine light or any other symptom.

Main problem is that in the evening, car would not start. Insert key, turn ignition and all dash lights go on, radio goes on but NOTHING happens - no cranking, no dimming of lights, no relays clicking. NOTHING! I've read about the EWS II system and how if for any reason the key is not recognized the DME does not get the "OK to start car" signal and nothing happens when you turn the key. Has anyone experienced this with a similar vehicle? Has anyone had to fix this?

Thought it might be a fried DME but I read that even if the DME is fried, the car will at least crank.
