...thanks for the kind responses... Yeah, I feel extremely lucky.
I would have thrown myself in front of the car, but I was driving it at the time (doh !!!)... And I did not have the presence of mind to react to the situation because the carwash in question was not my usual place. I had stopped there on a lark after a good Indian meal nearby. From now on it will only be the place I am accustomed to... with low inclines and 20 mins of wash time for 12 quarters.
Meanwhile, the car continues to sound "fixed"...
