I had a similar issue with a 1994 325i. I replaced the radiator, thermostat, with no resolution. Turned out it was a head gasket issue, and the length of time cracked the block as well. Hopefully your problem isn't that bad, but it's quite possible the gasket is blown, especially if there's a coolant smell in the exhaust.
